Coffee Shop Sessions…again…

This past weekend I took some time to relax into my Sunday, go out for breakfast and do some sketching. I had delicious eggs, it was a sunny day, so perfect. I got into some sketches for one of our projects, read some of my book, went back to my sketchbook, watched the curling, more sketching. It was a good balance.

I only did one observational sketch. There was this preachy, political, rambly, loud guy in the shop trying to talk the woman with him into something of some sort. I didn’t post it here because it isn’t very flattering and it frustrates me to look at it haha.

I did develop the sketch below. The main idea behind it was the lingering thoughts that stay in the back of your mind and every once in a while you need to let them out somehow. I wanted to use some of my markers, doodle a little, get some patterns in there. I think that it came out pretty well for a sketched journal page.

Welcome Spring with the Help of Environmental Artist Nicole Dextras

Video

r-MAD-LILACS-large570

As she typically does this time of year, Mother Nature is having her doubts about weather or not she is ready to let the snow melt away completely.

Watching this interview with Nicole Dextras for some reason seemed to express what this time of year is about, for me anyway. Getting out to explore what has been growing and changing around us, being curious and appreciating/welcoming the curiosity of others. As if the more I get out and explore the more likely it is for Mother Nature to reward me with some warmth. Hint Hint 🙂

In any case, enjoy the video and if you have ever seen Nicole Dextras’ work in person please share your experience. I am sure I would not be able to stop smiling if I saw someone walking down the street wearing a lilac coat. Also spend some timve looking over her website, it is worth the time.

What is the Deal with Fonts?

If you have had any sort of experience with graphic design or a graphic designer you have experienced the amount of time and attention paid to typography. Designers spend hours deciding what font to use, looking at new fonts, reading about fonts, altering spacing and sizes. But why? what is it that makes typography and font selection so important?

The thing is, each font has a history and a personality. Not every font works for every setting. Using the wrong font is like showing up to a casual BBQ with a ball gown, or showing up to a job interview with your pyjamas. Comicsanscriminal.com explains this idea in a very humorous fashion. Go through it even if you are not a Comic Sans Criminal, it is worth it.Comic Sans Criminal

Hoefler & Frere-Jones, a typography company, has an excellent website that describes their font collection, their history and personality. It is a brilliant website, and a useful too for people to start learning about typography.

Photo-walk: Duck Duck Goose and One Angry Swan.

These pictures were taken around noon on a still sunny day in March. This time I have included some juxtaposition between the original picture and the Photoshoped version to show the entire process and the thoughts process. In each paring the original is on the left and the photoshoped version is on the right.

Just a little colour and exposure correction can make the picture pop.

Just a little colour and exposure correction can make the picture pop. I cropped the picture a bit as well to remove more of my shoe from the corner.

I chose to cropped the swan out of the picture. Mainly because I have better pictures of this swan and the poor geese, but also because I thought the goose was more captivating by it self. I also felt that having the picture in Black and White was more striking. I also played around with some exposure settings to add a little but more drama to the picture.

Colour corrected. The new blue works much better with the crisp white of the swan.

The duck is not in focus, but I still sort of like this picture. Even so, just for the sake of comparing, I wish I had version of this picture with the duck in focus... My shutter speed just was not set right.

10: Fire Hydrants (update)

In my latest status update I mentioned how I enjoy capturing various fire hydrants around the world. Like I mentioned having my new phone will make this a lot easier and I am sure my collection will grow quickly. I have to admit that capturing them in point and shoot fashion may not be ideal. But the truth is, I miss a lot of interesting hydrants because I often do not have my DSLR at all times. Therefore, in this instance point and shoot is a good solution.

Here are some.

What are your Rights as a Photographer?

Compact-DSLR-Overview-cameras

Have you ever been on a photo-walk and wondered “can I take a picture here?” or “will I get in trouble for taking this picture?”. Well there are laws that specify your rights.

Ontario-Photography-Laws-V1.0

Keep in mind that the laws will most likely vary from country to country and from province/state to province/state. The above link is just pertaining to the Canadian province of Ontario. Be sure to look up the laws in your area. It may prevent you from getting in trouble or even worse, deleting a good picture you actually had the right to take.

Know your rights and happy photographing 🙂

TUPFLogoSquareFinal

Over the past week I have been attending the first and perhaps annual Toronto Urban Photography Festival (TUPF). The festival has been great so far. Plenty of FREE workshops, talks, walks, and exhibitions.

My background with photography: I studied the basics of photography theory in school. I even got a chance to learn how to develop and print my own black and white film. Something I highly recommend if you are really interested in photography. I also studied the history of photography as part of my undergraduate degree. Supper fun stuff… makes you really think about what you see.

Recently I bought myself a nice new camera, yes the one I have been drooling over for almost a year. The TUPF events really gave me a good reason to take the camera for a few nice spins around the city. The fact that spring is just around the corner is also a huge factor as the weather is finally a bit milder. I will, over the next few weeks or so, upload some of the pictures I have taken during the past few days. Would love to hear what your thoughts are. Which picture do you like best and why? And as usual, if this series inspires you to be creative in anyway, I encourage you to share your work with us.

Elements of Graphic Design and Pondering their Relevance to Other Fields.

by DOROTHY LEUNG

by DOROTHY LEUNG

A blog post by Dorothy Leung suggests that graphic design and architecture are not so different in the aesthetics and atmosphere in relation to they  organize elements. She, inspired by an article by Nancy Bernard , compares the two fields in the chart posted above. Rightfully Leung comes to the conclusion that there are some elements of design that transcends many fields. After all things like colour theory is colour theory regardless if its is in regards to fashion, interior design, or painting.

Nancy Bernard’s article Without Contrast You’re Dead in a 2000 issue of Critique should be read by all artists and designers dealing with visual media. Design and art has certain rules that should be understood. They can be broken, but only after they are fully understood can they be broken with proper intent and therefore proper effect.

06: Carleton University Scuba Diving Association Logo

CUSDA approached me about designing a logo for the launch of their association. They had a few criteria that they wanted respected in the logo.

  • Inclusion of the Carleton University Raven Logo.
  • Inclusion of a scuba diver
  • their abbreviated name

They sent me a sketch that depicted their vision inside of a circle. In their case it seemed like the association had a hear idea of what they were looking for. What I did was take their requirements and unified them into one cohesive unit instead of separate elements.

Status

03 Status

Hello Blog world. It has been a while since I posted a status update. This does not mean I have not been active. It just means I have not set up a routine for blogging. Many of my personal projects are progressing and evolving. I will make share them with you guys in detail soon.  In addition to personal projects the girls and I have had multiple conversations about Nivå6 and how to keep this organized and on a continuous role. There may be a few changes happening on the blog in next week or so…. keep an eye out. :)

Here is an update on past projects:

08 GolrokhKeshavarz.com: My Website

Phew. Ok I have kept this hush hush… mainly because i have been test-running it for a while. But after many attempts, alterations and adjustments. TADA… I am sure I will continue altering it and changing it around as time goes by. I mean one of the main reasons I wanted a website portfolio is because I wanted a platform where I can things up to date and fresh on a regular basis. I am open to suggestions, thoughts and comments as long as they are of a constructive nature. :) So check it outGolrokhKeshavarz.com you can send me a message by going to the contact section on the website. I am looking forward to hear from you.

09 Social Media Craze.

I have finally entered this millennium when it comes to my “cellphone” technology. I put cellphone is quotes because a friend of mine pointed out how  out of date I was for still having just a cellphone. I guess I can see his point. Not having a smartphone really does put you out of touch with how things are moving today. SO I have finally acquired myself an Iphone and I am all over the various social media platforms.

Twitter: TheGoldieK

– I am not 100% sure I have finalised how I want to use Twitter as of yet. But I am sure I will figure it out and let you know as soon as I have a game plan. So far I am just following people/organizations/architecture firms

Instagram: TheGoldieK

– I am planing my first Instagram outing this coming Sunday (March 10 2013) downtown Toronto. I am sure I will find plenty of interesting things/events/encounters to share. One thing that I am very excited about is the idea of shooting fire hydrants. Its something that I at some point picked up and have been doing on my various trips. The only hindrance so far has been that mot interesting hydrant sigtings happen at random and I do not drag my DSLR with me on a regular basis. The Iphone has changed that. VERY EXCITED TO SHARE

Pinterest: Golrokh Keshavaz

-Pinterest is just FUN. I do take short pinterest breaks when I need a break from whatever I am doing. There is so much on there that its like a little mini vacation from life. Nivå6 actually has a pinterest board… check us out there.
